Susie will write more soon - as soon as she is not so distraught.
Until then, the following was written by Craig at DogExplorer.com.
Sam, the World's Ugliest Dog, Has Passed Away |
Friday, 18 November 2005 | |
A DogExplorer.com Exclusive Sam, a Chinese Crested Dog entered in our World's Ugliest Dog contest and known throughout the world as Sam, the World's Ugliest Dog, has passed away. He was fifteen. We were notified of his death during a phone call with his owner, Susie Lockheed, today. Anyone who has spent anytime with Susie and Sam would know that she adored him, and, he adored her. Sam helped Susie through some difficult health issues and Susie also credits him for helping her find her fiance. In addition to the love she showered on the little dog, Susie likely also saved his life when her fostering him on a temporary basis turned into an adoption. Sam was getting on in years, not the most social of dogs and very hard to adopt out as a result. Susie saw something beyond his looks and brought him into her life. Their story illustrates the point DogExplorer.com had hoped to raise through humor with our World's Ugliest Dog contest. That older, less photogenic dogs, not only deserve homes, they can enrich the lives of those who adopt them in ways unimaginable. Our deepest sympathies go out to Susie at this difficult time. Thank you, Craig. A visit to DogExplorer.com is well worth the visit. |
I heard the news today,
sweet Sam,
The Ugliest Dog in the World,
Dead at 14, so young to be gone,
You captured the hearts of many,
Bringing a smile to their faces,
You probably didn't realize,
How loved you were by so many,
But one heart spoke to you more,
Her name was Susie,
Her grief vividly felt,
Knowing she will see you again,
That does not ease the pain,
Doesn't even come close, Sam,
To holding you in her arms,
Feeling your comforting touch,
Your sweet countenance,
Laughing, playing and smiling with you,
In her dreams, Sam,
Beloved dog and companion,
Remembered by many,
Wanted by one, Susie!

Susie:
I know your heart is in a million pieces right now. Saying good-bye to a beloved pet has got to be one of the most difficult things a devoted "parent" is faced with. I've experienced that pain before, and I wish there was something I could do or words that I could offer that would actually help. My sweet girl has been gone almost a year now, and I don't think a day goes by that I don't think about her. Just keep it close to your heart that you did the best thing for Sam always, right up until those final moments w/him in this plane of existence. What a wonderful story you've had to share with the world and will continue sharing! It's hard to fathom right now, but as each day passes, the tiniest sliver of your grief will be replaced with nothing but funny, happy memories of Sam. You and Sam are in my thoughts, Susie! :) -- Stacy in Missouri
